Responsibilities

In this role, an incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the Lab is adequately staff for the assigned shift and that work is conducted in accordance with established policies, procedures and quality/safety standards. Contacts manager as necessary to resolve issues beyond scope of responsibility.


Lead Essential Functions:
Note: Incumbents may not perform all of the representative examples of “lead” job duties below, but they must perform a number of them to warrant classification as a “lead”.

  • Performs Med Technologist Lead duties for work unit.
  • Receives a report from each section when arriving on duty to assess status of equipment, pending work and coverage.
  • Coordinates scheduling and section assignments to ensure adequate staffing coverage; monitors rest periods and meal breaks; notifies the applicable supervisor or manager (at home) if adequate coverage cannot be obtained; checks on sections of the lab during the shift to determine the need for staff re-arrangement or to address workflow issues.
  • Acts as the laboratory representative by taking phone calls from physicians, nurses and clients and strives to resolve any issues to their satisfaction within established lab regulations and requirements; follows up on any unresolved issue by leaving a clear and concise communication (e-mail/voice-mail/QIM) to the supervisor/manager for their next working day.
  • Acts as a resource for testing protocols or instrument troubleshooting; assists with equipment troubleshooting to include hands-on as well as hot-line/service rep communications.
  • Receives calls and documents information on short-notice absences, and calls in replacements as necessary; provides feedback to managers regarding staff performance.

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a chemical/physical/biological or other life science and relevant generalist clinical laboratory experience within the last five years, OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in laboratory medical technology, with clinical rotation.
  • International education will be evaluated for equivalency.
    NOTE: Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in a field other than those mentioned above AND who meet the required CLIA educational standards for testing personnel, will be considered.
  • Two years of work experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Licensure/Certification:

  • National MT certification with ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), AMT (American Medical Technologists) or Certification with the US. Department of Health and Human Services as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist; OR
    MLT certification with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a chemical/physical/biological or other life science.
  • For new graduates, if not held at date of hire, one-time national certification must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
