Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervisor and medical direction Specimen Processors performs accessioning and processing of clinical specimens in a manner that provides accurate and meaningful results.

This position requires a detail-oriented individual with the ability to handle but not limited to the following: 

  • Prepares specimen are for daily workload and maintains appropriate inventory of supplies 
  • Performs and documents routine maintenance of any processing equipment 
  • Accurately accessions all specimens with correct demographic information clinical history proper test requests etc. 
  • Maintains a clear understanding of pre-analytical factors influencing specimen integrity 
  • Rejects specimens which do not meet proper standards as specified in the procedure manual
  • Relays information to ordering physician and testing personnel 
  • Properly labels all specimens by complying with identification protocols
  • Prepares specimens according to protocol centrifugation storage transport etc. 
  • Delivers specimens to appropriate personnel according to schedule 
  • Follows all safety and hazard programs 
  • Assists in the collection receipt dissection processing and packaging of surgically collected specimens (if trained) 
  • Compliance of specimen handling as it relates to Clinical laboratory law (signature of form required) 
  • IATA Certification required during 90 day probationary period 

Additionally this position requires duties associated with an office clerk position as follows but not limited to: answers phones faxes reports when requested prints requisitions for physicians and prints and reviews billing batches for submission to billing service and crates packing lists. 


Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • 2 years experience processing laboratory specimens
  • Medical Terminology Certificate required
  • Valid CA Driver's License
  • Good communication skills. Ability to handle people in diverse situations
  • Intermediate computer skills and keyboard operation

PREFERRED:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • AA or AS degree in chemical physical biological or laboratory science
