Responsibilities
Job Summary / Purpose
Under the direction of the healthcare provider and practice manager, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)/Orthopedic Technician (Ortho Tech) is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes the safety, well-being, and optimal outcomes for all patients. This role involves performing essential clinical tasks, including orthopedic technician duties such as splinting, casting, and dressing, as well as preliminary physical assessments like measuring vital signs. The CMA/Ortho Tech collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Provide general patient care in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Greet and prepare patients for examination by the healthcare provider.
- Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, current medications, and presenting problems.
- Collect urine drug specimens, draw blood samples, and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis as required.
- Administer prescribed medications and vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or nasal methods.
- Perform orthopedic technician duties, including splinting, casting, and dressing functions.
- Conduct routine tests, such as EKGs, as needed.
- Schedule patients for diagnostic testing and follow up to ensure completion.
- Communicate test results and the plan of care to patients via phone or mail, as directed by the healthcare provider.
- Prepare, clean, and sterilize instruments; maintain and organize patient exam rooms; dispose of contaminated items according to established protocols.
- Document patient care plans, test results, and examination findings in the medical record as directed by the healthcare provider.
- Escalate non-routine issues, concerns, or questions to the practice manager or healthcare provider.
- Complete required safety checklists and quality control measures.
- Ensure patient safety and protect patient privacy rights in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program
Licensure and Certifications
- Current and valid certification in one of the following:
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA-NHA)
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
- National Registered/Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA-AAH)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 5 days of employment
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training
- Ability to travel and work at various locations
- Proficiency in performing urine drug screens and administering injections
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with staff and patients
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures
- Thorough understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain composed in emergency or uncertain situations
- Positive, compassionate attitude towards patients
- Proficient computer skills, particularly with medical management software
- Strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience as a Medical Assistant
