Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

The Security Officer is expected to provide a reasonable safe and secure environment for all who enter CHI Saint Joseph Health properties and to assure the physical security of buildings and grounds. It is expected that the security officer will demonstrate behavior consistent with CHI Saint Joseph Health core values and humankindness. The security officer shall support CHI Saint Joseph Health’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality improvement/process improvement activities.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Patrol on foot and by vehicle the facility and grounds.
  2. Patrol on foot and by vehicle all perimeter buildings and posts.
  3. Regulate parking by employees and visitors.
  4. Give directions and assist with minor vehicle problems.
  5. Provide escorts for employees.
  6. Provide security coverage in the Emergency Department.
  7. Direct traffic as requested.
  8. Transport persons to facility services as required.
  9. Provide courier services as needed.
  10. Lock and unlock doors as provided for or as required.
  11. Back up staff on all stat calls.
  12. Participate in all fire and disaster calls.
  13. Stat pick up of medical supplies from/to other facilities.
  14. Log visitors and issue passes.
  15. Patrol all patient care and waiting areas.
  16. Log in and release patient valuables in cooperation with Admitting.
  17. Conduct lock down and opening up procedures at designated times.
  18. Log all activities in daily log to accurately record events of shifts.
  19. Informs the Supervisor/Manager/Director of Security regarding ANY circumstances or situations that have or may have serious impact on the hospital.
  20. Supports and adheres to Security Department policies and procedure guidelines.
  21. Serves as Officer-In-Charge of the scheduled shift when requested by Supervisor.
  22. Maintains current knowledge of new methods, products, trends, and practices in hospital security and emergency management.
  23. Reports unsafe acts or conditions to the Lead Officer in a timely manner.
  24. Escorts suspicious persons without lawful business at the hospital from the property.
  25. Recognizes an escalation/de-escalation of force situation when confronted with the threat or initiation of force and makes the correct decisions without direct supervision.
  26. Responds to calls for assistance in a timely and prudent manner using due regard and exercising Safety Protocols at all times. Assistance calls include, but are not limited to: control of violent or unruly patients and visitors, crimes committed on hospital property.
  27. Assists employees, visitors/guests, and medical staff when a need exists to call the police.
  28. Makes reasonable judgments that consider the factors of an incident prior to taking action, minimizing liability to hospital at all times.
  29. Effectively prioritizes calls for assistance.
  30. Responds to service calls in a timely and prudent manner. Service calls include, but are not limited to: opening and securing doors, general information, personal escorts, assistance with disabled vehicles.
  31. Safely and courteously performs traffic control/parking duties as required.
  32. Issues parking citations as necessary in accordance with parking policies.
  33. Safely and courteously maintains the hospital main entrance and ER lobby free for normal traffic.
  34. Monitor security alarms and dispatch officers promptly to location(s) where a security problem has been noted.
  35. Use appropriate emergency and radio codes in dispatching security officers while knowing hospital campus to ensure that dispatches are to the right location.
  36. Completes clear, concise, and legible reports in a timely manner.
  37. Demonstrates communications skills to include: age sensitive awareness, accurate listening, proper and polite speech, correct grammar and comprehensible writing.
  38. Assures confidentiality by disseminating information only on a need-to-know basis.
  39. Completes training programs as required.
  40. Uses the fire extinguishing equipment when necessary.
  41. Satisfactorily completes the Workplace Violence training course on an annual basis.
  42. Maintains a familiarity with hospital disaster response plans.
  43. Responds to Emergency Codes in the prescribed manner.
  44. Maintains current knowledge of the location of Emergency equipment, supplies, and emergency operation locations.
  45. Maintains Security Department and Patient confidentiality, and reports incidences when breach of Patient confidentiality is witnessed or reported.
  46. Satisfactorily completes the Annual Update program.
  47. Attends at least 75% of all Department Staff meetings.
  48. Satisfactorily completes other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; or three (3) years’ experience as a security officer

Six (6) months experience as security officer in a hospital or healthcare setting, prior law enforcement or military service;

or one (1) year experience as a security officer.

Required Licensure and Certifications

Auto:KY BLS-CPR

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

Must be able to speak English, communicate clearly orally, and in writing; understand and use de-escalation techniques
