Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

This job is responsible for planning, managing and evaluating the daily patient caseload of the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) Psychiatric Assessment Team, which is responsible for all aspects of patient care regarding clinical and legal parameters/processes of patients on Single Bed Certification (SBC). Work focuses on legal and clinical compliance with all requirements of the SBC agreement and on ensuring the provision of safe, timely and appropriate patient care. An incumbent applies considerable knowledge of behavioral health patient needs and demands in operationalizing daily safety management and providing an excellent quality of care across multiple VMFH hospitals. 

Work includes: 1) administering a consistent approach to clinical nursing based on established principles and cost effective best practices; 2) addressing challenges with sustained quality of care given the increasing volume of complex mental health patient caseloads of detained patients; 3) ensuring that overall goals relating to quality of care and patient safety in market share are achieved; 4) adhering to the clinical quality improvement initiatives to enhance/streamline current procedures/processes and to ensure services meet all relevant standards; 5) collaborating with ongoing performance improvement activities (e.g. peer chart review, rounding, identifying/responding to negative quality trends, participating in the survey readiness); 6) knowledge and training in emergent situations with comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment; and 7) collaborating daily patient caseload with effective crisis intervention, medication management/treatment plans and consideration of environmental influences in treatment and follow-up care.  An incumbent directly reports to the Manager of Psychiatric Assessment Team who then reports to the Program Director of BH and has a matrixed relationship with the Region SVP-Chief Nursing Officer relating to standards of clinical practice.

Work also includes collaborating standards/procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and standard of care, and promoting/facilitating organization-wide adoption of technology which provides real-time access to data elements relating to patient care and supports/enhances the care process while improving upon efficiency and effectiveness. 

Work requires considerable knowledge of behavioral health legal concepts and professional standards/regulatory requirements, a high degree of clinical professionalism and the ability to work effectively with a variety of internal/external committees/work groups and interdisciplinary teams to represent program interests, promote organizational objectives and ensure compliance with standards of patient care/practice, patient civil rights and liberties, safety/risk management guidelines and applicable legal/regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Work Experience Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, graduation from an accredited school of nursing, AND A MINIMUM OF TWO YEARS OF PSYCH NURSE EXPERIENCE that would demonstrate attainment of the BH requisite job knowledge/abilities. 

Work experience in Behavioral/Mental Health in a hospital setting is preferred.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Washington State Board of Nursing. 
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification is preferred.
