Responsibilities

This position can be fully remote position after required training and based on business need.  This position is specific for our Cardiology Service line.

This job is responsible for abstracting a large volume of clinical case records within published deadlines for continuous
reporting to Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and/or The Joint Commission (TJC) in support of CHI-Franciscan Health
(CHI-FH) business objectives and compliance with regulatory standards. Work involves; managing the overall record
retrieval process for abstracting required data; collecting numerous complex data elements from individual patient
records; ensuring the integrity of the electronic data transmitted to an established national database, keeping meticulous
records and presenting results to leadership. Incumbents are also accountable for producing reports addressing
variances from the regulatory standards for clinical outcomes, and identifying significant data trends, outlier values or
unusual data for additional review by physicians and/or management staff.

Abstracts clinical data from assigned CHI-FH hospitals/clinics for internal customers and external entities,
in accordance with contractual requirements.

• Develops efficient abstracted data management processes and reporting systems.
• Ensures the integrity of the data by checking and auditing information submitted.
• Assures that abstracted data is reported to appropriate standing committees and external entities in a timely
manner.

    • Produces abstracted data using organizational software and a uniform report format to maximize
      organizational consistency. 
      • Enters abstracted data into web-based databases for electronic transmission to third-party vendors and/or payers,
        and subsequent transmission to CHI and/or The Joint Commission (TJC), and elsewhere as appropriate.
    • Develops reports and presents/explains abstracted data to various committees and leadership groups at FHS
      to meet the quality improvement needs of the organization.
      • Identifies and validates evidence-based best practices in clinical practice and patient safety to guide clinical areas
      in performance improvement activities; researches nature/scope of impact on existing activities and makes
      appropriate recommendations through reports and presentations.
      • Works with providers to interpret data trends in source and abstracted data; draws conclusions; summarizes
      findings that display compliance variations from regulatory standards.
      • Maintains ongoing variance reports and updates managers/interested parties when significant trends appear in the
      data.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in nursing, and three years of recent related work experience that demonstrates the attainment of
the requisite job knowledge, skills and abilities.

Bachelor’s degree in nursing is strongly preferred.

Job Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing principles, standards, protocols, procedures, equipment and associated
    clinical data management.
  • Knowledge of meaning and usage of medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques relating to data management/collection and database auditing.
  • Knowledge of the content and intent of regulatory requirements applicable to matters within designated scope
    of responsibility.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to understand and accurately interpret clinical data for timely and accurate
    abstraction.
  • Ability to identify data anomalies, and potential issues or trends that warrant further tracking or review.
  • Ability to convey ideas and express information effectively in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to manage continuous data collection from multiple sources/sites.
  • Ability to read, understand and communicate in English sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position.

Licensure/Certification:
Current licensure by the Washington State Board of Nursing is required.
