Responsibilities

The Department of Translational Neurosciences at the Barrow Neurological Institute is currently seeking a Lab Manager for the Manfredsson research group which investigates the development of gene therapy for neurodegenerative disease. We are looking for an experienced scientist to assist with managing the laboratory. Duties include overseeing day-to-day operations managing animal colonies and general laboratory projects. In addition the successful applicant is also expected to participate in (and lead) research projects including small animal surgery and behavior histological processing and molecular biology assays.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. At least four years of experience working professionally in a basic science laboratory. Skills needed include data generation writing up laboratory procedures supervising and monitoring lab operations to ensure productivity. Solid understanding of how to conduct experiments to test new hypotheses and how to maintain written records of research. The candidate is also expected to assist in creating reports for grant proposals and presentations/publications. Keep account of orders maintain equipment and supply inventory delegate daily maintenance and experiments. Analyze results using statistical analyses. Manage graduate students postdocs and other technical staff. Be responsible for ordering of all materials and management of funds. Be responsible for animal protocols implementation of animal procedures and managing animal census.

Desired Skills: Master degree desired. Strong experience in one or more research areas: cellular/molecular biology gene therapy neuroscience or rodent animal models. Cellular/molecular biology skills include: protein and nucleic acid separation and purification and analysis PCR protein interaction assays. Nucleic acid bacterial cloning techniques including ligations transformations and transfections. Cell culture aseptic technique. Experience with viral vectors is a plus. Subcellular fractionation and organelle analysis. Biochemical extractions enzyme assays antibody use and immunohistochemistry. Neuroscience/rodent models research includes: colony maintenance (breeding/genotyping) survival surgery behavior and histological analysis (tissue preparation immunostaining imaging).


Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience in a research clinical or other scientific environment required.

Six (6) years of prior work experience in a research clinical or other scientific environment preferred.

Familiar with laboratory techniques. Working knowledge of the scientific method and proven laboratory techniques.

Preferred: Has knowledge of lab function and oversight.

Ability to contribute technically and continues to make contributions to reviewed research reports.

Ability to contribute to training and educating students technicians post doctoral associates and laboratory head if necessary.

Demonstrates an ability to continually improve performance.

Proficient computer skills required.

Proficient with laboratory techniques and basic computer skills preferred.
