Responsibilities
The Cerebrovascular Research Laboratory in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute is seeking a full-time post-doctoral research scientist. This NIH-funded basic and translational research laboratory directed by Dr. Andrew Ducruet MD and Saif Ahmad PhD focuses on immune and inflammatory mechanisms of injury in stroke and Vascular cognitive impairment. Applicants are expected to have an excellent track record of academic work including rigorous scientific method and publications. The ideal candidate would be highly motivated and interested in the field of stroke and cerebrovascular disease. They should have experience in both independent and collaborative research presenting research findings at academic conferences and writing up research for publication. Successful candidates will be those who are open to learning new techniques given the rapidly changing scientific environment good communication and teamwork skills able to perform or supervise preclinical experiments (technicians medical students residents) and position maintaining a collaborative partnership with the laboratory principal investigators. The applicant will be expected to function independently with minimal supervision. The responsibilities of this position include performing molecular biochemical and preclinical research laboratory analyses using established protocols or protocols described in the literature adapted as necessary to the needs of the current research setting. Duties will include performance of functional assays immunohistochemistry DNA/RNA/protein extraction Western Blot ELISA RT-PCR flow cytometry immunofluorescence and histochemical staining and cell culture models including both cell lines and primary cell culture. Work may also include performance of surgical preclinical models of stroke including intraluminal filament and photothrombotic models of middle cerebral artery occlusion as well as carotid occlusion models of vascular cognitive impairment. Additional work may include extraction of RNA and protein from preclinical models of stroke and potential handling of tissue and blood from human stroke patients. Likewise behavioral and cognitive assessments in preclinical models will be required. Careful documentation of research data and protocols is expected as well as data analysis with statistical software such as Microsoft Excel and SAS. The applicant will be required to calculate analyze and present their data using advanced statistical techniques to assist with writing manuscripts and grant applications as well as the orientation and training of new staff. The Barrow Neurological Institute is a translationally-oriented basic science research facility located in Phoenix Arizona and located adjacent to a large tertiary care hospital. It is in an urban center of academic biotechnology and pharmaceutical research neighboring Arizona State University and the University of Arizona School of Medicine and immediately adjacent to the Creighton University School of medicine. Qualifications: Ph.D. and/or M.D. in biomedical sciences with a strong background in molecular and cell biology as well as immunology. Prior experience with in vivo preclinical experiments is necessary. Prior experience in middle cerebral artery occlusion stroke models would be a significant plus. Must have the ability to conceive new/innovative ideas or solutions using good logical and scientific problem-solving skills. Must be able to clearly communicate results in oral and written form acceptable to senior research staff.

Familiar with basic computer, mathematical, scientific, reasoning, and oral and written communication skills as appropriate required.
Training
Laboratory or clinical technical and/or interpersonal skills as appropriate required.
Technical and/or conceptual expertise in a relevant field preferred.
