Responsibilities

The Market Chief Medical Officer for Critical Access Hospitals (MCMO-CAH) is a senior level leadership position with important local and market responsibilities. The MCMO may be a Hospital CMO (HCMO) who also has additional responsibilities for the market. The MCMO reports directly (“solid line”) to their Critical Access Hospital Market President. The MCMO has a dotted line to the regional CMO (RCMO) and (if applicable) the Hospital President where they serve as HCMO. The MCMO-CAH has a dyad relationship with Market Chief Nurse Executive (MCNE) and together they are accountable to the Market President to provide support around clinical initiatives.

  • The MCMO-CAH serves as the primary liaison between the RCMO and other HCMOs and medical staff leaders in the market. The MCMO is on point to effectively communicate the national and regional priorities and expectations from the RCMO. Similarly, the MCMO communicates concerns, questions and suggestions from HCMO colleagues and medical staff leaders to the
    RCMO.
  • The MCMO-CAH collaborates with the RCMO and MCNE to disseminate and support national clinical goals, advance clinical excellence (i.e., quality, patient safety and patient experience),
    promote adherence to clinical standards, reduce unjustified clinical variation, and ensure regulatory readiness. The MCMO-CAH is accountable for closely monitoring clinical performance in the market, focusing on and supporting facilities that are underperforming, and involving the RCMO as appropriate.
  • The MCMO-CAH collaborates with the various CAH medical staff leaders, quality/patient safety leaders, and the CAH Market QPS Director to facilitate and ensure appropriate and effective peer review, ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) and focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE) as needed.
  • The MCMO-CAH works with the RCMO to sponsor, coordinate and communicate national Physician Engagement Council initiatives across the market. The MCMO-CAH supports other HCMOs and medical staff leaders in the market with their local physician engagement and well-being efforts.
  • Collaborates with the Central Region QPS VP in assisting managed CAHs and those for whom we provide regulatory and QPSIP support.
  • The MCMO-CAH works with the Market President to set strategic direction and increase the competitive position for the market.
  • The MCMO-CAH also partners with colleagues in Physician Enterprise in developing physician networks, strengthening market integrity, advising on specialty recruitment needs unique to the critical access environment, and expanding non-acute care services.


Qualifications

Education/License 

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Oseophathic Medicine - Required 
  • Active medical license in the hospital location state
  • 5 or more years of medical practice
  • 5 or more years of HCMO experience or a comparable, formal senior leadership role
  • Advanced degree in business, medical or healthcaremanagement (preferred)
