Overview

The laboratory supervisor initiates, receives and maintains communication between the hospital laboratory and Administration; organizes the department workload; plans for competent staffing and supply needs; is responsible for the technical and scientific supervision of the laboratory; creates and maintains good internal communication; prepares for inspections; consults with the visiting pathologist, performs and reviews the laboratory workload; collects patient blood samples; and serves on the infection control, safety and risk management committees.

The laboratory supervisor also performs routine phlebotomy, prepares and analyzes patient specimens for testing or culture, has knowledge of theory in areas of Transfusion Service, Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Coagulation and Microbiology; performs quality control; interprets quality of patient results as they correlate to instrument operation; performs routine instrument maintenance; relays results to the nursing floor or physician; and performs miscellaneous related duties and other duties as assigned.

All of the job standards and skills included within this description will be performed and documented according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines of CHI Oakes Hospital as they apply. Measurement of performance will be made by demonstration, observation, and documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Assures the maintenance of laboratory practices that respect patient and customer needs including privacy and security, communication needs, and resolution of conflicts.
  • Acts as a resource person by solving technical questions with the laboratory regarding procedural questions. Handles situations that require troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Coordinates statistical analysis of laboratory procedures, staffing, and blood utilization in a timely manner.
  • Organizes the laboratory workload to allow for its efficient completion in order to meet laboratory deadlines.
  • Promotes good communication between all laboratory personnel by holding regular laboratory meetings, posting memos, creating policies and dealing with questions and problems as they are
    presented.
  • Coordinates orientation of new employees to the laboratory procedures and policies using a structured orientation process.
  • Exhibits creativity in developing improvements/growth for the laboratory by solving problems and initiating new programs under the direction of administration.
  • Maintains open communication between administration, pathologist, physicians and the laboratory.
  • Coordinates continuing education for all laboratory employees.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in science-related discipline.
  • ND State License in Medical Technology
  • Current, valid certificate by American Society for Clinical Pathologists: CLT-NCA, MLS, MT-AAB, MT-AMT, ASCP-IMLS, or MT-ASCP.
