Job Summary / Purpose
This position provides overall strategic leadership and development for CommonSpirit Health's system-wide employee well-being and time-away strategies. This position ensures the programs' ongoing sustainability, affordability, engagement, compliance, and competitiveness. The position fosters a better employee experience through a comprehensive, collaborative, and holistic approach encompassing physical, emotional, social, financial, and spiritual well-being. This role collaborates with system, regional, and local leadership, including Human Resources, Mission Services, Clinically Integrated Networks, Population Health, nursing, patient safety and quality teams, and effectively manages external partners.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Strategic Direction - This Director provides strategic leadership for CommonSpirit Health's system-wide employee well-being and time-away programs, partnering with the System Vice President of Rewards and Benefits Strategy and other benefit leaders. This role develops strategies aligned with CommonSpirit's mission, vision, values, and business objectives, using data-driven, evidence-based practices and facilitating information sharing across regions and key stakeholders.
- Well-being Program - The Director develops, implements, promotes, and monitors a comprehensive, inclusive, and holistic well-being program, leveraging data and evidence-based practices to improve employee health and well-being while ensuring compliance. This role leads well-being programs (annual cost exceeding $30 million), including well-being initiatives, Employee Assistance Program(s), and adult and child care support. Leads the annual launch of well-being initiatives, including working with vendors to generate data, preparing analyses, recommending program design changes, negotiating contracts and performance metrics, collaborating with administrators on system setup and testing, and developing ongoing well-being communications for employees, leaders, and the HR community. Collaboration with benefits directors, wellness managers, Clinically Integrated Networks, Population Health Management, and other stakeholders is key to aligning the program with business strategies and improving health outcomes.
- Time Away - This role develops and implements PTO, vacation, disability, holiday, state sick leave, personal and leave of absence policies and strategies, ensuring legal and HR best practice compliance. They lead a team, guiding HR and benefits administration to align policies with employee needs and business objectives, managing escalated issues, and partnering with legal counsel on complex matters.
- Cost Management - The Director develops cost-effective well-being and time-away strategies, collaborating with system finance and the Benefits Center of Excellence data and analytics team on budgeting, regional plan assessment costs, and financial matters. Assesses and monitors the effectiveness of current, new, or proposed program initiatives and reports on their financial and employee impact. Develops measurements, reviews plans’ utilization and performance against those measurements and other benchmarks, and develops cost projections for proposed and ongoing programs.
- Compliance - Provides interpretation and guidance on compliance matters, including state and federal regulations pertaining to health, well-being, and time-away programs. Creates and maintains well-being and time-away program documentation and completes all required regulatory and compliance reviews. Assists in coordinating employer-sponsored benefits with government-sponsored programs.
- Mergers & Acquisitions - Leads integration of newly affiliated/disaffiliated organizations or new business lines into well-being and time away programs.
- External Partner Management - Oversight and management of well-being and time away consulting and vendor-partners to deploy effective health management, disease management, engagement and benefit strategies, which follow federal guidelines; sets expectations and monitors performance. This includes managing dedicated vendor account/program manager(s) and other external resources.
- Internal Partner Management - Collaborates with system leadership, HR stakeholders, Internal Communications, HR Support Services and Technology, Leave of Absence Administration, Payroll and other internal CommonSpirit departments to oversee ongoing implementation, administration, and communication of well-being and time away programs.
- Managerial/Staff Development - Mentors, develops and supervises well-being and time away team members.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
Seven to ten years of experience in human resources, with a significant focus on PTO, vacation, leave strategy and policy development. Experience managing employee well-being, time away, or benefit programs, preferably for a large, multi-site employer. Bachelor’s degree (well-being or related field) or a combination of education and/or additional job related experience in lieu of the degree.
Required Licensure and Certifications
CEBS certification preferred
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training
- Language and Communication Ability: Knowledge of the concepts, tools and techniques for effective listening and communicating; ability to apply these theories to receive, transmit and accurately interpret information and ideas. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Math Ability: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Decision Making and Reasoning Ability: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques. Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
- Influencing Ability: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to impact decisions within and outside the organization.
