Responsibilities

The Recreational Therapy Coordinator plans and supervises the activity program (i.e. social, recreation, intellectual, religious and work type) which encourages each individual resident to function at his or her optimal level of independence and maintain his or her level of normal activity and enjoy a quality of life. 

  • Supervisory duties of activity staff, including hiring, scheduling, evaluating, training, and terminating personnel. 
  • Operational oversight for the department including department goals, quality assurance, budget, monitoring financial statements, maintains adequate supplies and equipment, and policy and procedure development.    
  • Coordinates with other departments to provide planned activities for residents.  Creatively plans and schedules group activities daily and provides a monthly calendar for residents, staff, visitors and family members.
  • Collaborates and communicates with volunteers (individuals and groups) in the community by requesting, supervising and training volunteers for the Care Center.  
  • Recreational Therapy Coordinator takes responsibility to plan, coordinate and facilitate resident council each month.  Also assists resident council and family council as desired by these councils. 
  • Provides residents personal assistance with mail, shopping, personal appointments, and contact person for coordinating special events/family gatherings for residents.      
  • Participates in resident assessment and care planning.  Develops individual activity outcomes and interventions for each resident.  Responsible for completing the MDS, implementing plan of care, monitoring resident progress, discussing care needs with family and residents, and documenting responses to programs in the electronic record.    
  • Responsible for attending monthly Department Director meetings, in-service, Quality Assurance meetings, all staff meetings, providing monthly department meetings and opportunities for continuing education.  
  • Responsible for coordinating the care of pets to include veterinary appointments, food supplies and special care needs.   
  • Part of the interdisciplinary team that meets each morning to discuss and find solutions for high risk behaviors including VA’s, pressure ulcers, falls, infections, hospitalization, and behaviors.
  • Responsible for keeping National Association of Activity Professionals Activity Director certification valid through Minnesota State Wide Activity Professional approved continuing education units.
  • Meets with physical and occupational therapists on a weekly basis to discuss plans for individual resident therapy programs and oversees aides responsible for carrying out these programs.  

Qualifications
  • Associate of Arts Degree or vocational training with concentration in therapeutic recreation or occupational therapy or Bachelors Degree with experience in long term care setting or health care.   
  • National Certification through NCCAP
  • Certified Nurse’s Assistant
  • BLS
