Responsibilities

The incumbent performs chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests and verifies results for use in the diagnosis and/or treatment of disease. Coordinates the technical operations of the laboratory sections for which responsible. Demonstrates competency in patient testing for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.

Job Duties: 

  • Demonstrates competency in age-specific patient testing for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. 
  • Properly identifies patient, sample, and/or result and maintains sample integrity throughout the analytical and reporting process. 
  • Performs technical procedures accurately, correlating technical data and evaluating results for reasonableness, and
    maintaining required documentation.
  • Accurately reports results via computer entry and verification or recording on manual report forms.
  • Makes appropriate workflow decisions considering clinical needs, test priority, and response to expedited requests. Helps lab to achieve 88-93% lab average TAT during the evaluation period. Completes fair share of patient workload, as determined by random TAT audits, and assures timely performance of non-testing duties.
  • Recognizes and reports critical values according to policy.
  • Prepares, calibrates, and maintains equipment, trouble-shooting as needed, documenting actions, and reporting instrument status to co-workers.
  • Recognizes and takes action on all quality control situations requiring remedial action. 
  • Ensures weekly QC audits are performed.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner, disinfecting work area at least once per shift and cleaning up reagent or specimen spills as soon as possible.
  • As required, records date of receipt, expiration date, lot number, date put into use, and identification of reagent/supplies.
  • Assures good transition at end of shift by checking that adequate supplies/reagents are available for the next shift.
    Documents inventory needs and restocks work area.
  • Provides for orientation and training of new section personnel.
  • Prepares sections for and participates in inspections.
  • Evaluates and implements new procedures and equipment, including writing policies and procedures and maintaining updated procedure manuals in compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Supports the management of the laboratory, particularly in the absence of the supervisor. Adjusts daily staffing as necessary to match workload with hours.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

Education and Experience: 

  • 2 years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical laboratory.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science.
  • 1 year internship in a hospital clinical laboratory.

Licensure: 

  • Registration as a Medical Technologist by the Registry Board of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.
